Harry Fane Vintage Cartier Extra Large Tank Normale 1926

Regular price £67,500

The Tank Normale was the first Tank watch made by Cartier and the shape was based on the silhouette of the Renault tank. Introduced in 1919 as a celebration of the part this Tank played in winning the War for the Allies, the Tank Normale has been a part of Cartier’s stable of watches ever since. In 1926/27 Cartier, Paris made a limited number of fifty extra-large Tank Normales. Square in shape, the extra size was really apparent in the width of the watch rather than the length. Whilst it retained all the classic Cartier Tank Normale features, this watch benefited aesthetically from it’s larger case.

In 1926 Cartier, Paris produced 135 Tank watches which was the largest number of watches produced in one year pre-1960. This watch contains all the traditional French hallmarks and makers marks but also has the intriguing inscription ‘Patagonia 1927’ by which this watch is known. This watch is dated to November 1926
