James Merry Ophrys Ring Silver
James Merry is a visual artist from the UK, now based in Iceland. He is primarily known for his hand embroidery and mask-making, and as a frequent collaborator with Björk on her visual output. He has collaborated with institutions such as the V&A, Gucci, The Royal School of Needlework, Tim Walker, Tilda Swinton and Iris Van Herpen.
This launch represents the first pieces of jewellery released by James. Having moved into silversmithing on his most recent masks, the transition to jewellery was a natural next step. Rather than adorning the face, these new pieces migrate his focus to the hands and ears - and the first time his metalwork has been commercially available.
The rings were cast at Pangolin Editions in Gloucestershire, in the same town where James grew up. Their form is inspired by the Ophrys genus of orchids - which mimic the shape and scent of insects. This metamorphosis between the anatomical and botanical is a common theme in James´ wider work, which usually takes an organic biological form.
